Job Description

About the Library

The Warburg Library is a research library providing support for students, academics and a national and international scholarly community. The collection, arranged thematically in a unique subject-order designed to facilitate interdisciplinary research, makes it an essential resource for the history of the classical tradition in the Middle Ages and Early modern time and Renaissance studies. The Library is open-access and consists of around 370,000 volumes and ca. 1,200 current periodicals. The electronic resources are currently expanding.

The Role

The Warburg Library is appointing two Graduate Library Trainees for the year 2019-2020. The post is a one-year fixed term training post designed for graduates carrying out a year of work experience and training prior to attending library school. The trainee is based in the Reading Room but works with all Assistant Librarians in the Warburg Library. This enables the position holder to gain specific sectional experience and skills as well as developing an overall understanding of the links between the different sections and how the library fits together as a whole. The trainee is entirely integrated into the smooth running of the Library. The Library Trainee will be responsible to the Librarian and will work under the direction of the Assistant Librarian in charge of the Reading Room. A staff development programme is available for the trainee, along with other Graduate Library Trainees in the School of Advanced Study, and monitoring and feedback from that programme takes place.

A personable, customer service-orientated individual, committed to a career in librarianship, the successful person for this post will have a competent level of IT skills (especially Word and Excel), good interpersonal skills, and will be able to work independently and as part of a small team. Some experience of customer service in any context would be an advantage, as well as an interest in one of the subjects served by the Library. Knowledge of a modern European language would be useful.

Applicants should hold a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
