Job Description

Are you passionate about helping children learn, enjoy and develop their love for reading and literacy? Would you like to work in a varied and rewarding role?

An exciting opportunity has arisen to make a direct and positive difference to children's reading and library experiences within schools throughout Cumbria.

The aim of Library Services for Schools is to support literacy and learning and to encourage reading for pleasure. The team provide a specialist library advisory service to primary and secondary schools and other educational establishments across the county.

The Role

As a key member of the team, you will work closely with both school staff and pupils and be responsible for choosing the best resources to support the national curriculum, school projects and reading for pleasure. You will be required to select and buy books, give practical advice on library layout and stock in school, keep up to date with new developments, and be instrumental in promoting a love of books and reading at both primary and secondary school level. You will also be responsible for managing our three school Book Buses and overseeing our annual secondary school book award.

What the Team say

“I love the variety that you get working in Library Services for Schools – no two days are the same. It’s really satisfying knowing that you’re making a difference to children’s reading.”

Who we are looking for

The ideal candidate will be a librarian or teacher with substantial experience and knowledge of children’s literature, school libraries and the national curriculum. We would particularly welcome candidates with experience of working at secondary school level. We are looking for someone that is enthusiastic and confident, enjoys working with children and has the ability to build strong working relationships at all levels within the school setting.
