Job Description

This is a rare opportunity for someone with excellent library skills, knowledge and experience to join a talented and creative library management team at Brighton & Hove Libraries. The vacancy is for a full-time Libraries Services Manager who will specialize in stock and information services.

This post is one of nine Libraries Services Managers who collectively develop, deliver and manage library services across 14 public libraries in the city. Every member of the team spends around half their time on shared operational library management duties, and line management responsibilities. This includes overseeing public service delivery in all 14 libraries in the city from the central Jubilee Library location.

The rest of your time will be spent on your specialist responsibilities which include:

  • Management of library stock in all formats, books, electronic resources, audio-visual and other media, and to assist in the monitoring of the Bibliographic Services and other stock contracts
  • Effective communications, information and enquiry services, working collaboratively with partners and colleagues
  • Lead on the Reading and Information Offers, as part of the collaborative national public library offers, and motivate a specialist team to support their delivery
  • Responsibility for the libraries services’ unique rare books and specialist collections

This full-time post has an average of 37 hrs a week worked across a 4 week shift pattern as follows:
Week 1: Weds/Thurs/Fri: 8.30-5
Week 2: Mon/Tues 8.30-5.30; Weds/Thurs/Fri: 8.30-5
Week 3: Mon: 8.30-5; Tues: 8.30-5.30; Weds: 8.30-7; Thurs: 8.30-5; Fri: 8.15-5
Week 4: Mon: 8.30-5; Tues: 8.30-5.30; Weds: 8.30-7; Fri: 8.15-5; Sat: 8.15-5; Sun 10.20-5

The post holder will be based at Jubilee Library and will also work at other library locations across the city.

There is a requirement for working one weekend in four, for which you will receive enhanced pay, and some evening duties as indicated above.

You will also occasionally be asked to be flexible in your working hours, and provide cover for colleagues who are on leave or absent.
