Job Description

About the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) promotes the United Kingdom's interests overseas, supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe. The FCO has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing approximately 12,600 people in over 270 diplomatic offices. We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth.

The role of China Research Analyst

As China Research Analyst, you will join our Asia Pacific Research Group and play an important role in strengthening Asia Pacific expertise. We will look to you to provide informed and timely research and analysis on China’s politics, which will deepen understanding of China within the FCO and Whitehall, informing the development of UK policy towards China. You will build strong, productive relationships internally with FCO policy makers, and externally with a range of contacts, including academics, think-tanks and expert commentators. You will also be expected to undertake travel to the region and support government led exchanges with allies on China.

This is an excellent opportunity to become Whitehall’s leading expert on China and deploy your skills in a front-line capacity.

About you

You must be a British Citizen and have been a resident in the UK for two out of the last 10 years prior to your application. You will have a wide range of knowledge about China affairs, with either a post-graduate qualification plus experience working on or in China, or a relevant undergraduate degree plus substantial experience working on or in China. As an expert on Chinese domestic policies, you will be respected by your peers and have experience of working within an academic environment. You will have proven research and analytical skills, sound judgement and the capacity to think strategically. With strong communication skills, you will have a good working knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin).
