Job Description

The British Antarctic Survey are looking for a temporary Cataloguer to join the Archives Services team. BAS Archives holds records reflecting all aspects of the Survey’s activities since its origins in the 1940s, including a large amount of scientific data. The aim of this role is to catalogue data and records of biologists to a level comparable with similar material already within archives, following recognised professional standards.

This position requires an individual with demonstrable knowledge of archival description standards and the principles of archive management, and experience of using archival cataloguing systems/software. The post-holder must also have accurate data entry skills. The role involves working closely with a small team, so good interpersonal skills are essential. An interest in the biological sciences and/or Antarctica would be desirable.


To catalogue data and records of biologists to a level comparable with similar material within the BAS Archives, following in-house conventions and recognised professional standards.

As appropriate, and where time allows, to assist with other routine functions of the Archives Service.


Standard qualifications are GCSE at grade C or equivalent in Maths and English.


Backlog Cataloguing:
- catalogue the records of biologists that have been accessioned to the archives but not yet fully described.

As appropriate, and as time allows:
- Deal with enquiries from staff and members of the public.
- Process new accessions, including listing into the accessions database and listing routine additions to existing records series.
- Maintain statistics of records usage and the environmental conditions in storerooms.
- Undertake ad hoc administrative duties as required.
- To undertake other duties as requested by the Director of BAS.
