Job Description

The British Library’s holdings of heritage materials grew substantially during the 20th century, with some items acquired directly from collectors active during and after World War II. We now want to explore the earlier origins of some of these books and manuscripts, with a particular focus on changes in ownership during the years 1933 to 1945.

The Library has a new role for a researcher with experience of provenance investigation to join the Printed Heritage Collections Team. In this important post, you will examine specific areas of our collection to establish whether these include items which were spoliated in the period 1933 to 1945, documenting your investigations and ensuring that items under investigation are correctly recorded in our publicly available catalogues.

You will have a degree in a relevant discipline and a good knowledge of mid-twentieth century European history. In addition to experience of provenance research (in relation to books, manuscripts or art works) you will have a good understanding of the cultural sensitivities surrounding this material. You will have a demonstrable research interest in the collections of the British Library or another major research institution and relevant employment experience. You will have some cataloguing skills and (ideally) a professional qualification in librarianship or information studies. You will be able to work with material in a range of European languages. Though much of the work will be carried out independently, you will also work collaboratively with colleagues, to pool knowledge and communicate your findings.
